As the 2021 summer comes to an end, Labor Day offers the promise of fireworks, cookouts, and parades to celebrate the achievements of American workers. Despite the threat of illness, long hours, staff shortages and lockdowns throughout the past two years, there are many labor industries to recognize who worked to keep the economy afloat. Here’s why this Labor Day, Aiphone wants to pay special tribute to the security industry.
Security is an essential service
When the pandemic lockdowns began in 2020, industries were identified as either essential or non-essential and the result left many buildings without their employees. What started as a temporary measure quickly became a way of life as COVID-19 continued on, resulting in many closures for offices, schools and even cities. The security industry remained active as it was deemed essential — resulting in security laborers taking extra steps to protect other essential workers and citizens through their daily responsibilities. The industry quickly and efficiently adapted to the challenges of the pandemic and demonstrated the value of security laborers.
Security can be found in almost every labor market
Whether it be government, healthcare, education or residential markets, security is found through surveillance cameras, access control systems or biometric solutions. After the pandemic began, the adaptive security industry was able to use existing technologies to aid in the health concern efforts. Touchless access control was imperative to essential laborers who had to continue to work in populated environments, allowing less contact between people that could be infected. Hands-free devices and mobile applications began to be used in campus environments, such as mobile health check-ins for students or automatic doors for government buildings and hospitals. Since the security industry was able to evolve to this new normal, a post-pandemic world will be able to offer a more seamless and efficient way of enhancing safety in shared spaces.
Security has many different roles
There are so many different roles in the security industry for laborers and in regard to products and technologies, systems integrators and installers hold important roles. When the pandemic started, many businesses rushed to implement the necessary security measures to keep people safe, putting integrators and installers in situations where they were asked to make decisions that they typically would have more time to reflect on. While at first it seemed like the demand for these security measures slowed as time went on, installers continued to work through massive backlogs of projects. In particular, surveillance camera installations soared as fear of the pandemic trickled into anxieties about upticks in crime and many buildings were left empty as employees moved to remote locations.
While the pandemic has certainly changed how commercial and office space handle health concerns, it has proven the worth of the security industry. As an essential service to many communities, Aiphone commends security, and all our essential laborers and wishes them a relaxing Labor Day.
